The Fibroid Care Centre (FCC) at Nordica is set to mark its 1,000th High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment, five years after introducing the technology for fibroid treatment in Nigeria and West Africa.
The centre will commemorate the milestone at an event in Lekki, Lagos, on October 3, 2026, bringing together healthcare professionals, former patients and other stakeholders.
HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to target fibroid tissue without making a surgical incision, offering an alternative to conventional surgery for eligible patients.
However, suitability for the procedure depends on individual medical assessment.
The centre said it introduced its ultrasound-guided HIFU service in 2021 as part of efforts to expand treatment options for women living with uterine fibroids and adenomyosis.
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in or around the uterus that can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, abdominal swelling and reproductive problems.
A former patient who underwent HIFU treatment at the centre reported reduced menstrual bleeding and abdominal swelling following the procedure.
“My healing process has been good. Noticeable changes in my body and monthly cycle. My bleeding has reduced drastically to five days. No discomfort or blood clotting. Swelling has reduced. I can sleep on my tummy now,” she said.
The patient, however, said she planned to undergo a scan to determine how much the fibroids had reduced.
Another testimonial from a person who referred a patient from Equatorial Guinea to the centre said the patient had reported being free from pain following treatment.
The October 3 event is expected to feature discussions with medical practitioners and former patients on their experiences with HIFU and the development of fibroid care in Nigeria.
The centre said the milestone reflected its investment in medical technology and specialised expertise, as well as efforts to raise awareness of treatment options available to women.
