Lagos moves to avert medical guild strike, appeals for dialogue

The Lagos State Government has appealed to members of the Medical Guild to shelve their planned three-day warning strike over alleged unilateral salary deductions and related issues, assuring that their grievances are being addressed with urgency.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Ministry of Health acknowledged the concerns raised during the Medical Guild’s press conference held on Saturday, July 26, where the body announced its decision to commence a warning strike from Monday, July 28.

The Ministry noted that the current situation marks the first of its kind in recent years and said it is deeply concerned about the welfare and motivation of healthcare workers in the state.

“Negotiations and engagements with the Medical Guild are ongoing,” the statement read. “A Conciliation Committee comprising representatives from both parties was earlier constituted to resolve all outstanding issues. Meetings have been held, and documents submitted by the Guild are being reviewed in line with existing policies and fiscal regulations.”

While reiterating its commitment to industrial harmony and improved healthcare delivery, the Ministry appealed to the Guild to allow dialogue to prevail.

“We urge the Medical Guild to continue on the path of dialogue while we work to reach a peaceful and just resolution in the interest of all parties, especially the residents who may bear the brunt of any service disruption,” the statement added.

The government also assured that contingency plans are being put in place to minimize disruption to healthcare services should the strike go ahead.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Ministry said, remains committed to promoting the welfare of healthcare workers and fostering stability in the health sector.

The statement was signed by Mr. Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Health.
