Doctors fume as Lagos govt docks July salaries without notice

…Medical Guild alleges breach of trust, convenes emergency meeting

Medical doctors under the employment of the Lagos State Government have raised the alarm over what they described as a “clandestine, hostile, and illegal” deduction from their July salaries without prior notice or consultation.

The aggrieved doctors, operating under the aegis of the Medical Guild—the umbrella body for all doctors in public hospitals in Lagos—expressed their displeasure in a strongly worded letter signed by the Guild’s Secretary, Dr. Adekunle Akinade.

According to the Guild, the deduction was done in clear violation of earlier assurances given by government officials that any issue regarding salary discrepancies would first be tabled for discussion.

“This is a breach of trust,” the letter stated. “We were told that the government would call for a meeting to discuss the implications of the purported salary miscalculation. That never happened. Instead, what we see now is a unilateral action.”

The Guild warned that the action, if not promptly reversed or addressed, could unsettle the fragile industrial harmony in the health sector.

Describing the deduction as “provocative,” the Guild said it had crossed a red line and vowed to take all necessary steps to protect the welfare and rights of its members.

“The officers’ committee of the Guild views this development with utmost seriousness and will initiate appropriate steps aimed at protecting the interests of our members,” Dr. Akinade said.

To chart a path forward, the Guild has scheduled an emergency Representative Council meeting for Friday, July 25, 2025, to deliberate on possible responses and actions.

While calling on members to remain calm and law-abiding, the Guild reiterated its commitment to pursuing a fair and amicable resolution through all available channels.

Efforts to get a reaction from relevant Lagos State Government officials were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
